A Business Appraisal, or Business Valuation, is generally used for family business succession planning, small estate planning, potential business sale analysis, and other operational needs. A company valuation is usually used to determine stock options for an employee. The valuation can also be used in selling part of the company to an employee or giving the employee a bonus in the form of company stock.
The vast majority of business enterprises are sole proprietorships or family businesses. Typical examples of small businesses would be cafes, gas stations and service providers. A company valuation is often used to determine the future ownership of a family business to facilitate the ownership transfer to other family members.
In an Estate Plan it is necessary in the overall Estate Valuation to have a reasonable accurate value of the company.
For a business valuation, following the guidelines set-forth is IRS Revenue Ruling 59-60 is sufficient.
